Alexandria is governed by a popularly elected mayor and board of aldermen.  The 6 aldermen are elected at large.  Terms of office are 4 years and the terms are staggered; there is an election every two years.  On one cycle 2 aldermen and the mayor are elected and two years later the other 4 alderman positions are on the ballot.  The Alexandria City election is held in early September of even numbered years.
