Band Falls Short In State Competition By Judy Fuson

The Tennessee State Marching Band Championship for Division II schools was held Saturday at Goodpasture High School.

The DeKalb County Fighting Tiger Marching Band was among 25 bands participating but came away empty handed in the awards department, missing finals by only 3.8 points.

This competition was established in 1989 as a state championship for schools with an enrollment of 900 or fewer students. Unlike most other competitions, there are no classes to group bands of similar size. All bands compete and are scored in a preliminary round of performances, and the top scoring ten bands are called back for another performance in the finals round, after which all are ranked and a state champion is chosen to receive the coveted Governors Cup.

The DeKalb County band won the Governors Cup in 1995 under the direction of Randy Rhody and came within 0.07 of a point of winning again in 2001 with Shannon Pirtle at the helm. The Fighting Tigers took fourth place in 2003 and fifth place in 2004 under the direction of Trevor Baxter. This year marks the first time this band has failed to make finals while participating in this prestigious contest.

The top ten bands in Saturday's competitions in order of ranking were 1st Page High School (Franklin), 2nd Harpeth High School (Kingston Springs), 3rd Elizabethton High School, 4th Milan High School, 5th Obion County High School (Troy), 6th Gibson County High School (Dyer), 7th Independence High School (Franklin), 8th Peabody High School (Trenton), 9th Sycamore (Pleasant View), and 10th Greenbrier High School.

Band Booster Meeting. 11/07/05 6:00pm
The Dekalb Band Boosters meeting is scheduled for Monday November 7th. The meeting starts at 6:00pm at the band room. We'll be putting the final wraps on our marching season, discussing the spring trip, and our Feb. Fundraiser show just to name a few. The Dekalb County Band Booster meets on the 1st Monday of every month.  If you would like to support the band, please make plans to attend

DCHS Band Competes in Music City Invitational
By Judy Fuson

The DCHS Fighting Tiger Band performed Saturday (10/22/05)  at McGavock High School in the 27th annual Music City Invitational Marching Band Contest.  A total of 23 bands competed in 4 classes. DeKalb’s band placed third in the small class of bands with 56 or less musicians. The Color Guard, Field Commander, and Drum Line ranked second in class.

When asked his feelings about Saturday’s contest, director Gilbert said, “Disappointed”. He explained, “Not with the performance, just the outcome.  The judges gave us some good comments and this gives us a better idea of where we are and what we need to work on before Vanderbilt and State.”

The band will be performing at the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational next Saturday and the State Contest for Division II on Saturday November 5th.  Keep checking back to "Directors Corner" on the Home Page for departure times and special announcements.

Band Takes Second Place In Cheatham County Marching Invitational
By Dwayne Page (WJLE)

The DeKalb County Fighting Tiger Band won second place in Class Saturday (10/08/05) at the Cheatham County Marching Invitational.

Band Director Charles (Chuck) Gilbert says Greenbrier High School won the Class competition." We were very pleased with our performance, but in the long run our fate was in the hands of the judges, who awarded us second place behind Greenbrier High School. The band as a whole was second place, where the Drum Major, Dustin Estes, was second place in class and second place in the entire competition. Our Percussion Section was first in class and third in the entire competition".

Gilbert says he is especially happy with the progress of his Drum Major and the Percussion Section. " I'm very pleased with what we've seen out of Dustin so far. This is his first year to serve as the Drum Major. He is a sophomore. We ended the year last year with our Drum Major Donielle Ketchum, winning the title of number one Drum Major in the state, so Dustin has some very big shoes to fill, but I feel very confident about what he has been able to do so far and the fact that he is a sophomore bodes very well for both his future and our future as a band. Our Percussion Section has also been a very pleasant surprise because last year we had five seniors in our Percussion Section, so we were really concerned about what was going to happen this year. The young people have really stepped up. They practice hard and have very much overwhelmed the expectations that we thought we were looking at."

Gilbert says DeKalb County was among four bands in the class and there were nine bands in the entire competition.

The band will be performing at the Music City Invitational at McGavock High School on Saturday, October 22, at the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational on Saturday, October 29, and at the State Competition in Madison on Saturday, November 5th.

DCHS Band Takes Second Place In Class At Blue Devil Invitational
By Judy Fuson

The DeKalb County Fighting Tiger Marching Band came in second in class to competitor Wilson Central Saturday (10/01/05) in the 20th annual Blue Devil Invitational in Lebanon.

Wilson Central went on to win the Sweepstakes Trophy in the Small Division of a field of fifteen area bands.

DeKalb's field commander Dustin Estes, guard, and percussion also placed second in class in the captioned judged event.

The next competition for DeKalb County will be Saturday, October 8 at Cheatham County.

Columbia Contest Results (news story from WJLE)
The DeKalb County High School Fighting Tiger Band received high honors at the Columbia Invitational Marching Contest on Saturday (09/24/05).  The band received third place in the Field Commander Caption and took second place in Percussion, Color Guard, and Band.

Band Director Charles "Chuck" Gilbert says he was pleased with the band's performance. "We had a wonderful turnout for our performance in the Columbia Invitational Marching Contest. We performed at about 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and were in a very busy class but we did very well. There were eight bands in the class with us. We placed second in Band and in the different Caption Awards we received second place for our Color Guard and second place for our Percussion. Our first year Field Commander Dustin Estes placed third in the class. We are very proud of all of those students. We were very pleased with the outcome. The students had come off a very busy weekend with all the homecoming activities and were very tired, but they gave as much of their heart and soul as they could on the field. The most important thing was that we go out and put on a very good performance. As far as the awards, we just leave that to the judges. We just want to put a good product on the field."

The detailed results are:
Field Commander: First Place- Lawrence County, Second Place- Hillwood, and Third Place- DeKalb County
Percussion: First Place- Clarksville Northwest, Second Place- DeKalb County, and Third Place- Station Camp
Color Guard: First Place- Lawrence County, Second Place- DeKalb County, and Third Place- Clarksville Northwest
Band: First Place- Lawrence County, Second Place-DeKalb County, Third Place- Station Camp, and Fourth Place- David Lipscomb.

Gilbert says there is room for improvement as the band prepares for  the Blue Devil Invitational at Lebanon this Saturday. "We do have some things we need to really work on. The show that we're putting on the field, we have quite a bit more to add, some additions to make. We'll be working on that this week. We travel Saturday to Lebanon High School. We will be competing in the competitions there. This is going to be a big deal for us because last year we captured the Sweepstakes Trophy there, which is given to the best scoring band of the entire contest. So in a sense, we'll be trying to defend our title there."

New Uniforms

DCHS Band debuted new uniforms during the 1st home game of the season against Watertown. This is the 1st time in almost 15 years the band has had a new look. A Big Change like this is not cheap. BIG SURPRISE
The band let their hair down (and up and colored it) during the performance at the final football game of the season against Livingston Academy. If you are one of those people that are accustomed to seeing the band in their uniforms when they perform, you were in for a shock. Each member of the band dressed in the Halloween costume of their choice. We had an "Elvis", an "Elly May Clampet", even a "Slice of Pizza" marching on the field during the performance. This was a chance for the students relax and enjoy playing the show with no pressures and the audience seemed to have a ball.  Click Here for the pictures.

1INSTRUMENTS NEEDED
Do you have a working instrument that's collecting dust? Or perhaps something that needs a little fine-tuning to make it ring our with a clear song, but you never have the time to tweak it? Then perhaps you would consider donating your instrument to our local Band program.  There are students at Northside Elementary and Dekalb West who want to join  the program, but can't because the don't have an instrument and the schools done have any extra to provide.  Call Band Treasurer Teresa Sullivan at 597-6307 or 615-428-0404 to arrange a pick-up.   These programs feed the High School program and your help would help insure a successful future for Dekalb County's music programs
