Very Busy Homecoming Week for the Band 10/07/06

Dustin Estes, assisted by Michelle Scott won best in Division Field Commander at Vanderbilt Marching Invitational, with a score of 94 which tied for best overall.

Homecoming week is busy for all of the students of the DeKalb County High School but few are busier than the High School Band.  In addition to working on various floats throughout the week for Friday’s Homecoming parade, they tried very hard to maintain their normal practice schedule to prepare for last Saturday’s Vanderbilt Marching Invitational band contest.

The Band performed for all of the Elementary Schools in the county beginning with the West School on Thursday afternoon. During the 4th block of the High School schedule, the band boarded a bus and traveled down “under the hill” for a stand-still performance. West School Principle, Danny Parkerson said “I’m really glad the band came down and made us a part of the homecoming activities.”  After returning to the high school they unloaded their equipment bus to begin an after school practice and still had to work in that evening’s bonfire and powder puff football game.

The Band would like to thank their Guest Directors. Grace from Smithville Elementary and Michael from Northside Elementary helped field Commander Dustin Estes direct the band during their performance of  "Eye of the Tiger".

Friday Morning the band set up on the football field to perform for the Middle School and High School students. Unfortunately, the 1st performance of the morning for the Middle School was scrubbed due to inclement weather.  The band performed the full marching show for the Student Body of the High School at 9am then loaded up to perform a stand still for the Smithville Elementary by 10am.

After traveling back to the High School for a quick lunch the band boarded their bus and went to Northside Elementary to perform a stand still for their students and to pick up the parade when it arrived there. The band then marched in the parade to the square for one final stand still performance of the day for the entire community.

Friday night’s homecoming game was the final performance of the day. The Band performed their full marching show and played in the stands for the game. Most of the students even attended the Homecoming Dance after the game.

Early Saturday morning, the Fighting Tiger Band boarded the bus and headed to Vanderbilt University for the Vanderbilt Marching Invitational Band Contest. After a solid performance, Field Commander, Dustin Estes was awarded the trophy for best in Small Division with a score of 94.00. That score tied for the best field commander in whole competition (large and small division). The percussion section scored highest in the small class with a score of 83.00 but missed the Division award by 7 points. Director Chuck Gilbert said “We still have several small things that will be fixed in the coming weeks. It’s a constant work in progress. I’m very proud of these kids; they’ve maintained their focus on band even with all of the other things going on with homecoming. Next week we travel to Hickman County, and I feel confident that we’ll improve our whole program by then. We still have two contests to go this season before the Division II state Championships at Goodpasture High School on November 4th.”
