Alexandria
is home to the DeKalb County Fair, known affectionately
as the "Grandpa Fair of the South". The first fair
was held October 15-17, 1856 on the south bank of
Hickman Creek. The original buildings were
destroyed by Federal Troops in 1863 during the Great
Civil War. Nine years later in 1872 new buildings
were erected near the original site. Still a
popular event the fair has been held annually since
1872.
DeKalb Telephone Cooperative, now DTC Communications is
headquartered in Alexandria. Formed in 1951 DTC
provides the majority of DeKalb County with modern
telecommunications and cellular telephone services.

Alexandria is a peaceful and friendly community.
In Alexandria residents still greet each other on the
street. The town square is picturesque and
reminiscent of earlier times when the world wasn't
moving so fast and people stopped and chatted on the
sidewalks. The surrounding countryside is
beautiful with gently rolling hills, creeks and streams
and lush green forests and pastures.
The Town of Alexandria is governed by a
Mayor and Board
of Alderman. The Alexandria Police Department
provides law enforcements services for the town and the
fire protection is provided by the Alexandria Volunteer
Fire Department.
